THE ASK
Dive into the fashion trends of the 1950s & 60’s and take a closer look at how fashion responded to political & social movements
THE PROCESS
The first step to creating any big project is the research. Without prior research, our work cannot be adequate. My favorite decades to research were the 1950s & 60s, as many exciting new ideas and concepts emerged within them. For this project, I started off by diving into archives digging for a broader understanding of the decades as a whole. Over all of the research I did, one thing stood out to be the driving factor of all fashion change & trends: Politics. Politics shape our view of the world and play into trends more than we subconsciously think. Positive (and unfortunately) negative events lead to new ideas of what the societal standard of dress should be. After gathering the research & images of pivotal fashion moments, it was time to blend it all together.
putting it together
After gathering the research & learning about the decades’ zeitgeist as a whole, it was time to choose images that best represented the trends. I looked to the Met Museums archives and Pinterest to pull together the aesthetic represented in my work. After finding my images, I then compiled them all into a presentation slide deck that would showcase each main piece throughout its’ respective decade.

The Take Away
This project was one of the first projects I worked on where I was researching historical fashion trends. It really sparked my love for vintage fashion and the events that shaped societal dress of the time and eras. This is where I started my love for and collection of thrift vintage fashion pieces, and I went in to take more classes about fashion & costume throughout centuries.
